County Commission District 1

Next Election: November 2020

Description

District 1 includes the north parts of the county, from the Martin County line south to Northlake Boulevard, from the ocean to just short of the Lake. Along the coast it extends through Singer Island and Palm Beach Island, as far as Worth Avenue, and includes the area west of I95 and north of Bee Line Highway. The cities of Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, Tequesta, North Palm Beach, Juno Beach, and Jupiter Inlet Colony are included. Currently it is the only district that is majority Republican with a 7% margin of registrations. Much of District 1 is open land and it contains many parks, including most of Peanut Island, John D. MacArthur State Park and Riverbend Park. It is also the home of the county biotech initiative, with Scripps and Max Planck located along Donald Ross Road near the Turnpike.

History

District 1 had been represented by Republican Commissioner Karen Marcus for 28 years. The term limits ordinance made this an open seat in 2012. During her tenure, much of the northern county was developed, but her advocacy for the natural resources of the area led to the acquisition of large tracts of designated envrionmentally sensitve land. In the 2012 election, former Palm Beach Gardens Councilman and Republican Hal Valeche defeated then Gardens Mayor and Democrat David Levy, winning 54% of the vote.
