District 23

Next August 2016 Primary

Description

District 23 is much more regular than the CD20 it replaced. Including the urban areas south of Fort Lauderdale south to Hollywood, it drops down a narrow stretch of coast to Miami Beach, including Hallandale Beach and Aventura. The previous district surrounded Fort Lauderdale from the west like the talons of a claw, and was arguably the most ridiculous shaped district in the state. Home to DNC Chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, it is a very different district than its predecessor, but party affinity is similar.

History

District 23 is represented by Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz who has held the seat since 2004 when she won 70% of the vote in the seat vacated by Peter Deutsch who ran for the Senate that year. In 2006 she was unopposed and saw only third party candidates in 2008, but in 2010 Republican Karen Harrington held her to 60% of the vote. This year with the district significantly rearranged and a spirited Republican primary underway, it could be more of a race.
